Everything you need to know about Radiofrequency Microneedling
The all-you-need guide to radiofrequency energy-based aesthetics treatment

Microneedling has become a household staple for aesthetics treatment in recent years – and for good reason! It has proven to be effective across a series of dermatological conditions, including acne scars and hyperpigmentation, while being broadly safe and convenient to administer.
Despite microneedling being an evidence-based treatment, it has been the recipient of some controversy around its supposed benefits and limitations. Microneedling is not the wonder child of aesthetic treatments, but it has its place in treating many common yet stubborn dermatological conditions. Read on as we bust the myths and misconceptions around microneedling!
What is RF Microneedling?
Radiofrequency Microneedling is a precise energy-based technique that encourages tissue electrocoagulation, surface ablation, and electrothermolysis. These natural healing processes are important for dermatological recovery. Not only does it improve the surface appearance of the skin through smoothening and removal of dead/damaged tissues, it also stimulates the recovery of deep dermis layers.
How does microneedling work? As its name suggests, RF microneedling uses micro-insulated needles which aesthetic doctors use to penetrate the skin at specific points. This enables the RF energy to be delivered at precise temperatures. The thermo-controlled microneedling procedure effectively allows for the doctor to activate tissue and cellular responses that are necessary for natural healing, without damaging the epidermis.
Why do we use AGNES RF Microneedling?
Among the family of microneedling technologies, Dr D Aesthetics Medical Clinic uses AGNES RF Microneedling due to its proven clinical efficacy for producing the desired aesthetic outcomes. The AGNES RF technology uses 1MHz radiofrequency energy that can be delivered at either mono-polar or bi-polar frequencies, depending on the condition being treated. The RF pulses effectively target the inner dermatological structures, including the sebaceous glands and fatty tissues. Rigorously tested for safe clinical applications, the AGNES RF system has already received standard certification from the CE, FDA and ISO bodies, among many others.
Our clinic’s preference for the AGNES RF system is testament to our commitment to clients’ wellbeing, safety and aesthetic outcomes. One of the most important features of microneedling applications is safety, which the AGNES RF system achieves:
- The AGNES RF microneedling technology is equipped with a robust safety checking system to ensure that the microneedles are safe for application.
- Each microneedle is externally insulated to protect clients from unlikely skin burns.
Furthermore, we recommend the use of AGNES RF microneedling because of its customisability. We know that every client has a specific skin type, condition and treatment preference. As such, the ability to customise the treatment experience is important. AGNES RF provides several microneedle configurations with different sizes and shapes for the specific procedure. This is different from regular microneedling devices which might not offer the same flexibility.
Who should consider RF Microneedling?
The AGNES RF microneedling has been rigorously tested and designed for treating a range of dermatological conditions, from the removal of blackheads to smoothening our stubborn wrinkles. Due to the range of conditions that microneedling is suitable for, we recommend that clients speak to our professional aesthetics doctors at Dr D Aesthetics Medical Clinic to discuss potential treatment options. Some of the common conditions which clients receive treatment for include:
- Acne scars and comedones
- Blackheads
- Syringomas
- Wrinkles and finelines
- Double chin
- Eye bags
- Upper eyelid lifting
The flexibility to adjust the depth, pulse duration and mode of RF application makes it possible for us to administer microneedling for various conditions. For instance, by applying AGNES RF at the right depth along the contours of the eye bags, we are able to destroy fat cells that cause the unwanted appearance of eye bags. Similarly, inserting the microneedles along the wrinkled skin can stimulate collagen remodelling that is intrinsic to a more youthful appearance. In one clinical study, microneedling was demonstrated to reduce acne scaring by two grades in more than 80% of patients.
What can I expect during an AGNES RF microneedling treatment?
Upon scheduling an appointment with our experienced Dr D Aesthetics Medical Clinic doctors and deciding on a specific course of treatment for your skin conditions, the actual AGNES RF treatment session takes no longer than 30 minutes. During the session, you might experience light warm pressure building up on the treated skin areas, but most individuals will not experience noticeable discomfort. Some patients might also observe redness or ‘hot flashes’ on their treated skin for a short duration post-treatment, but this goes away naturally. Basically, there is little to no downtime post-treatment.
That said, heavier applications of RF microneedling may lead to more obvious side effects. Intensive treatment of eye bags in a single session may cause swelling and bruising, although even this will naturally go away in days. Our aesthetic doctors can provide professional advice on the expected side effects depending on the skin condition you might have.
What are the limitations behind RF Microneedling?
Treatment outcomes are not immediate. Although many of our clients observe noticeable results from just one treatment session, it is normal to undergo a series of treatments to achieve more long-lasting and optimal results. Depending on the condition being treated, it may not be realistic to see the effects of microneedling immediately after treatment. For instance, it typically takes 2-6 months for dispersed fat cells to be naturally removed after an RF microneedling session. Other dermatological conditions such as blackhead removal may experience improvement quicker.
Despite some of these limitations, RF microneedling applications have been clinically proven to be effective. Evidence-based treatment systems such as AGNES RF are both safe and efficacious, providing clients with a peace of mind when choosing this treatment mode.
